flydubai Secures 60 GE Engines for Expansion into Long-Haul Flights

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Dubai's low-cost airline flydubai is making a significant stride into long-haul travel by securing an order for 60 GEnx-1B engines from GE Aerospace. These engines will power the carrier's inaugural fleet of 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, highlighting a strategic move beyond its traditional 737 operations.

This announcement, made during the Dubai Airshow 2025, also encompasses spare engines and a comprehensive long-term services agreement, ensuring that flydubai can reliably extend its reach to new global destinations. Since its inception in 2008, the airline has grown to cover over 135 destinations across 57 nations, making this development a crucial milestone in its strategy for long-haul expansion.

The Boeing 787-9, praised for its efficiency and passenger comfort, positions flydubai to address the increasing travel demand while broadening its service portfolio. The GEnx-1B engines are renowned for their reliability and performance, having logged more than 62 million flight hours globally and powering a significant majority of active 787 models.

This aircraft-engine pairing equips flydubai to enhance fuel efficiency and operational reliability, vital for expanding its services across regional and international routes. This investment underscores the airline’s dedication to innovation and its response to changing customer preferences.

With the initial 787s anticipated in the upcoming years, flydubai is poised to reshape its long-haul offerings, providing passengers with improved connectivity and travel options through Dubai’s pivotal aviation center.
