Frida Kahlo's Self-Portrait Achieves $55 Million Auction Record

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

A self-portrait by the renowned Mexican painter Frida Kahlo was sold for an astonishing $54.66 million in New York, setting a new record for the highest price ever fetched at auction by a female artist. This landmark sale took place on Thursday at Sotheby’s, where the artwork, titled El Sueño (La Cama) or The Dream (The Bed), had an estimated value between $40 million and $60 million. The identity of the buyer remains undisclosed.

Created in 1940, the piece depicts Kahlo reclining in a bed that appears to float among clouds, accompanied by a skeleton bound with dynamite. This work uniquely blends Mexican folk elements with European surrealist styles and reflects a poignant moment in Kahlo’s life, particularly during her complicated relationship with fellow artist Diego Rivera.

Sotheby's has highlighted this painting as "the most valuable by a woman artist ever sold at auction." This breaks the previous record set by American artist Georgia O’Keeffe, whose piece Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 sold for $44.4 million in 2014.

This auction follows another extraordinary event at Sotheby’s in New York, where Gustav Klimt’s Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer achieved a staggering $236.4 million, marking the second-highest price ever for any artwork sold at auction. The record for the highest price remains with Leonardo da Vinci's Salvator Mundi, which was sold for $450 million in 2017.

Frida Kahlo, who died in 1954 at the age of 47, is globally admired for her striking self-portraits and distinctive artistic approach. The Dream (The Bed) not only adds to her impressive legacy but also underscores the increasing recognition and worth of women's art in the international market.
