Johannesburg, Nov 22, 2025: The G20 Leaders’ Summit 2025 commenced on Friday in South Africa, marking a historic moment as it's the first time this summit is hosted in Africa. This year’s focus is on “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability”, underscoring the need for global collaboration on critical matters.
Key discussions will revolve around enhancing disaster resilience, pursuing debt sustainability for low-income nations, facilitating finance for a fair energy transition, and promoting inclusive growth through essential minerals. Leaders will tackle economic, environmental, and social hurdles that affect the global landscape.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Johannesburg on the evening of Nov 21 to partake in the summit. He met with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the summit venue on Saturday, where they exchanged a traditional “Namaste,” illustrating the warm diplomatic relationship between their nations. The two leaders discussed regional and global priorities during their meeting.
During India’s G20 Presidency from December 2022 to November 2023, over 200 meetings took place across 60 cities, engaging all 28 States and 8 Union Territories. The Presidency saw remarkable participation, welcoming over 100,000 attendees, including 30,000 delegates from 135 countries. Under PM Modi’s guidance, the G20 welcomed the African Union as a permanent member, furthering India's commitment to inclusivity.
At the summit, PM Modi is set to convey India’s viewpoint on global challenges, focusing on inclusive sustainable economic growth and policies designed to support everyone. He will engage in several bilateral discussions with world leaders to enhance international collaboration on trade, climate initiatives, and economic advancement.
The initial session of the summit will delve into strategies for inclusive growth and sustainable development, while later sessions will focus on climate action, energy transitions, financial stability, and readiness for global health challenges.
