Gas Explosion in Northern Italy Claims Lives of 3 Police Officers, Injures 15

Post by : Roman D Marks

A devastating gas explosion at a farmhouse near Verona in northern Italy has resulted in the deaths of three Carabinieri officers, with at least 15 others injured. This tragic event unfolded early in the morning while police and firefighters were executing an eviction order against a family in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Authorities apprehended a man and a woman on-site, while a third suspect, who attempted to flee, was located later. All suspects are currently receiving medical treatment. The blast magnitude was so intense it could be heard from 5 kilometers away, turning the farmhouse into rubble.

The eviction order was confirmed by Luca Zaia, head of the Veneto region, due to outstanding debts. Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi expressed his condolences, labeling the incident as tragic, noting awareness of possible resistance from the family members.

Previous negotiations by police had failed, and at around 03:00 local time, upon entering, they encountered an ignition of a gas cylinder. Petrol bombs were also discovered on the scene. The explosion injured not just the officers but also three state police officers and a firefighter.

Verona prosecutor Raffaele Tito described the explosion as a case of "premeditated and voluntary homicide," occurring on an upper level of the farmhouse. Neighbors reported that the individuals threatened to detonate explosives rather than vacate.

Tributes were paid to the fallen officers by Italy’s Defence Minister Guido Crosetto and other political figures, honoring their bravery and sacrifice in the line of duty.
