Gaza health officials reported the arrival of 15 Palestinian bodies returned from Israel, bringing the count since the ceasefire began to 285. The latest transfer followed Israel's handover of the remains of an Israeli soldier captured during the October 7, 2023 attack that set off the conflict.
Under the ceasefire that started on October 10, Hamas has delivered the remains of 21 Israeli hostages to Israel. In return, Israeli authorities have released 15 Palestinian bodies for each recovered Israeli. Officials say identifying many of the bodies is difficult because of a shortage of DNA testing kits and extensive damage across Gaza.
Hospital administrators in Khan Younis warned that weak humanitarian conditions and ongoing reconstruction needs complicate the process. Only a fraction of the returned remains have been positively identified, with authorities publishing photos to help families with recognition.
The measured exchange of remains highlights efforts to sustain the ceasefire while managing the aftermath of the deadliest and most destructive period in Gaza's recent history. Both parties continue to confront complex logistical and humanitarian challenges as families seek closure.
