In a significant development, authorities in Germany have taken a married couple into custody, alleging their involvement in espionage activities benefiting China. The arrests took place in Munich, as part of a broader investigation into potential threats to national security, believed to be associated with Chinese intelligence efforts.
The federal prosecution service has identified the suspects as Xuejun C. and Hua S., asserting that they acted under the directive of a Chinese intelligence agency. It is reported that their attempts were focused on acquiring data tied to advanced military technologies, including fields like aerospace engineering and artificial intelligence.
Investigators revealed that the couple cultivated relationships with scholars and researchers at various German academic institutions over an extended time frame. They purportedly used false identities, masquerading as interpreters and automobile company staff, to infiltrate expert circles and gain insight into ongoing research.
Authorities allege that several German researchers were invited to China with the guise of presenting to non-military audiences. However, it appears some of these engagements included interactions with personnel from state-run defense enterprises and military-affiliated groups.
Following the arrests, police and intelligence officials executed searches at the couple’s homes and workplace in Munich. Investigations also extended to Berlin and other cities, with around ten individuals being questioned as potential witnesses in the ongoing inquiry.
This incident has escalated apprehensions in Germany and throughout Europe regarding foreign espionage activities, particularly targeting sensitive technologies and defense-related academic research. Security analysts have cautioned that sectors like artificial intelligence and semiconductor tech remain prime focus areas for international espionage.
As the investigation unfolds, officials in Germany have yet to disclose the entire body of evidence collected. It was reported that no formal response from Chinese officials was available at the time of this report. The probe into possible connections between the pair and foreign intelligence networks continues.
These arrests come amid rising global tensions surrounding issues of technology security and accusations of foreign interference in essential scientific work across Europe and other Western nations.
