In a significant step in the competitive AI infrastructure landscape, Google has rolled out its seventh-generation Tensor Processing Unit (TPU), named Ironwood. This chip is engineered to manage extensive AI workloads, such as real-time applications, positioning Google as a formidable force in the realm of enterprise AI solutions.
Developed entirely by Google, Ironwood can interconnect up to 9,216 chips within a single pod, effectively minimizing data bottlenecks. This architecture enables organizations to execute and scale large AI models with improved efficiency. Google asserts that this new chip surpasses the performance of its predecessors by over four times while also enhancing energy efficiency.
Ironwood has already undergone testing with selected partners earlier this year and will be made available for wider public use shortly. Notably, AI startup Anthropic is set to integrate up to one million Ironwood TPUs for its Claude AI model, indicating strong interest from prominent AI developers in adopting this technology.
In conjunction with the Ironwood launch, Google is bolstering its cloud computing capabilities with enhancements that prioritize speed, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness. The company's cloud segment has shown consistent growth, with Q3 2025 revenue hitting $15.15 billion, marking a 34% year-on-year increase, driven by the heightened demand for AI-enhanced infrastructure.
As the landscape of AI workloads evolves across various sectors, Google's Ironwood TPU signifies a strategic initiative to deliver high-performance, scalable solutions for enterprises. This chip places Google in a better position to rival Nvidia's GPU influence while potentially offering a more energy-efficient solution for expansive AI operations.
