Gulf States Seek UN Debate Over Iran Strikes Crisis

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Several Gulf countries have requested an urgent debate at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva over Iran’s recent missile and drone strikes across the Middle East.

According to official documents seen by Reuters, a joint diplomatic note sent by Gulf states described the attacks on Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates as a serious threat to international peace and security. The note also highlighted major human rights concerns due to attacks on civilians and key energy infrastructure.

The situation has escalated as the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran enters its third week. In response, Iran has launched large-scale missile and drone attacks targeting energy facilities and civilian areas in several Gulf nations.

Tensions have further increased after Iran reportedly closed the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route. This move, along with attacks on energy sites, has pushed energy prices higher and raised fears of global inflation.

The Gulf countries stated that these attacks were “unprovoked,” especially as they had assured Iran that their territories would not be used for any military action against it. They have called for immediate international attention to the crisis.

A draft resolution submitted by these nations strongly condemns Iran’s actions and demands an immediate stop to attacks on civilian infrastructure and commercial ships in the region. It also calls for compensation for damages caused to civilians, infrastructure, and the environment.

The council has acknowledged the request and is currently reviewing a date to hold the urgent debate, as confirmed in a letter by its president, Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro.
