Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called Gurpurab or Prakash Utsav, will be observed on November 5, 2025, commemorating the 556th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism. The day is marked across India and around the world with devotional services, processions and community activities that reflect his lasting spiritual and social influence.
Early morning Prabhat Pheris bring devotees together to sing hymns in the streets. Nagar Kirtans organise public processions carrying the Guru Granth Sahib in decorated palkis, accompanied by shabads and demonstrations of Gatka. Gurudwaras are decorated with lights and flowers, creating a solemn yet festive atmosphere for large gatherings.
Langar, the community kitchen, is central to Gurpurab: free meals are served to everyone regardless of religion or status, demonstrating the principles of seva, equality and dignity. Participating in and organising langar is viewed as a primary way to honour the Guru on this day.
Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in Talwandi (now Nankana Sahib, Pakistan) in 1469 and showed early spiritual insight. Around the age of 30 he experienced a revelation that led him to preach a message of one God, equality, rejection of caste distinctions, honest work, truthfulness and compassion. His teachings were later recorded in the Guru Granth Sahib, the central scripture of Sikhism.
Gurpurab also prompts the sharing of greetings, quotes and wishes among family and friends, and on social platforms. These messages typically stress peace, humility, compassion and the importance of selfless service in everyday life.
The influence of Guru Nanak extends beyond religious boundaries. His call for universal brotherhood, social justice and devotion continues to resonate and informs the values observed during the festival.
As communities mark Gurpurab 2025, the day provides a moment to reflect on Guru Nanak's life and teachings. Through prayer, volunteer service and acts of goodwill, devotees renew a legacy that remains relevant centuries after his birth.
