Tottenham Hotspur left-back Destiny Udogie, 22, and his family have received support from the club after an alleged firearm threat in a north London neighbourhood in September. The Italy international, who has been a regular starter this season, was reportedly targeted in an incident that has prompted concerns about the safety of footballers living locally.
Police said the incident took place late on 6 September when officers were called after a man in his 20s—later identified as Udogie—was allegedly threatened with a gun. Investigators also established that another man in his 20s had been reportedly blackmailed and threatened by the same suspect. No injuries were recorded in either report.
A 31-year-old was arrested on 8 September on suspicion of possession of firearms with intent, blackmail and driving without a licence. He has since been released on bail while enquiries continue and police stressed the investigation remains active.
Tottenham Hotspur confirmed it has been offering support to Udogie and his family since the matter came to light and said it would not provide further comment while legal processes are ongoing.
Udogie featured in Tottenham’s 4-0 Champions League win over Copenhagen on Tuesday, demonstrating focus on the pitch despite the ongoing police inquiry.
The episode underlines the off-field risks some professional players face, particularly in high-profile residential areas. Clubs have increasingly highlighted the need for player welfare, security and mental health support in such situations.
Signed from Udinese, Udogie has emerged as a promising attacking left-back for both his club and Italy. The club say the incident has not affected his selection, and he remains a regular in the first team.
Police urged anyone with information to come forward, and Tottenham said it is cooperating with law enforcement to protect its players and staff.
