Arsenal’s teenage winger Max Dowman etched his name into Champions League history on Tuesday, becoming the competition’s youngest participant. At 15 years and 308 days he entered as a second-half substitute in Arsenal’s 3–0 win over Slavia Prague.
Dowman eclipsed Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko, who had held the mark after appearing at 16 years and 18 days in 2020. His record follows a recent Premier League milestone, when he became the second-youngest player in the league behind teammate Ethan Nwaneri during his debut against Leeds United in August.
The youngster has already seen first-team minutes this season, featuring in league action versus Liverpool and making two appearances in the English League Cup. Against Slavia Prague he replaced Leandro Trossard in the 72nd minute, with Arsenal’s 3–0 lead unchanged.
Manager Mikel Arteta praised Dowman’s natural talent and adaptability at top level, saying that such attributes cannot simply be taught and that performance dictates selection regardless of age.
Chelmsford-born Dowman entered Arsenal’s academy at age five in May 2015. A left-footed attacking midfielder, he debuted for the under-18s at 13 and became the youngest scorer in the UEFA Youth League at 14.
Later that year he began training with the senior squad and impressed during Arsenal’s preseason in Asia, featuring in matches against AC Milan and Newcastle United.
Premier League rules require players under 18 to use separate changing facilities from the senior team, a measure Dowman adheres to. Off the field he has returned to school in Essex following the summer term, balancing education with his football commitments.
Before Dowman, the youngest Champions League appearance belonged to Moukoko; that record had displaced a 26-year-old benchmark set by Célestine Babayaro, who played for Anderlecht at 16 years and 86 days in 1994.
Dowman’s rapid rise underscores Arsenal’s investment in youth development and points to a promising future for the club and the teenager.
