Khushi Kapoor, daughter of producer Boney Kapoor, has formally begun work on Mom 2, the follow-up to her late mother Sridevi’s 2017 film Mom. The original earned Sridevi a posthumous National Film Award for Best Actress, and the sequel carries high expectations from audiences and industry observers.
In March, Boney Kapoor revealed he was collaborating with Khushi on a film and suggested a sequel to Mom was possible. The early news sparked debate on social media, with fans divided over whether Khushi can live up to the legacy of her mother’s acclaimed performance.
Reports indicate Khushi started shooting after Diwali, and previously unseen images from the set appeared online around her 25th birthday. The photos show her in a casual sweatshirt, appearing focused and at ease. TV actor Karishma Tanna was also photographed on set, dressed in a white salwar kameez.
Insiders say Mom 2 went on floors last week in Mumbai and that the production has completed its first 10 days of filming. Khushi is expected to play a central role, which suggests the sequel will continue to emphasise strong emotional narratives similar to the original. Production sources describe the shoot as progressing without major issues.
While the first film was directed by Ravi Udyawar, the sequel is being directed by Girish Kohli. Kohli, who contributed to the story, screenplay and dialogues of the original, has been given full directorial responsibility. Boney Kapoor reportedly chose him because of his familiarity with the material and his previous work on the film Crazxy.
There is speculation that Boney Kapoor may make an official announcement about Mom 2 on his birthday, November 11. Industry sources say a formal reveal, promotional material and further cast details could follow around that date.
With Khushi making her debut, the inclusion of known performers such as Karishma Tanna and the enduring memory of Sridevi’s original role, Mom 2 is already attracting attention in Bollywood. The project is expected to explore themes of family, justice and personal resilience, maintaining the emotional tone that defined the first film.
