Dubai Advances Mobility and Smart Transport Initiatives

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Dubai is rapidly advancing its next-gen infrastructure initiatives that aim to revolutionize transport for both residents and visitors. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, reviewed ongoing developments that are crucial to enhancing the emirate’s road systems, aerial taxi frameworks, and the visionary “Future Loop” project—essential components of Dubai’s forward-looking mobility strategy.

During a strategic meeting with His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), Sheikh Hamdan received updates on significant milestones that position Dubai as a leading hub for smart, sustainable mobility.

“Investing in infrastructure represents an investment in our people and future, aligning with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum,” Sheikh Hamdan noted, reiterating Dubai’s unwavering commitment to developing a connected and resilient urban environment driven by innovation.

The progress report included developments regarding the aerial taxi project, currently in operational trials by Joby Aviation Inc. in a desert area of Dubai. The company achieved a historic first by completing a crewed electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) flight from Margham to Al Maktoum International Airport during the Dubai Airshow 2025, marking a pivotal moment toward launching passenger services by 2026.

This electric aerial taxi boasts six propellers, four independent battery packs, and can achieve speeds of 320 km/h, with a travel range of 160 km. It can carry four passengers and a pilot, setting fresh benchmarks in safety, comfort, and environmental standards.

The RTA is also preparing dedicated Aerial Taxi Vertiports to facilitate operations. The first of these, being built next to Dubai International Airport, covers 3,100 square meters and includes two take-off and landing pads, ample parking, and air-conditioned passenger lounges. Negotiations are in progress with major developers for the establishment of additional vertiports throughout the city.

Simultaneously, significant extensions to Dubai’s rail network are in the pipeline. Upon completion of the Blue Line project by 2029, the combined metro and tram network will expand from 101 km to 131 km, including 78 stations and a fleet of 168 trains, all aiming to enhance connectivity within rapidly developing districts, while supporting the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33).

Sheikh Hamdan also assessed RTA’s intention to finalize 72 integrated transport initiatives by 2027's close. This encompasses the construction of 226 km of new roadways, 115 bridges and tunnels, and 11 vital transport corridors set to alleviate traffic congestion and improve accessibility in urban sectors.

A highlight of the briefing was “The Future Loop,” part of the Dubai Walk Master Plan—an ambitious initiative designed to make Dubai a pedestrian-friendly city year-round. This project envisions creating 3,300 km of new walkways, refurbishing 2,300 km of existing paths by 2040, and building 110 pedestrian bridges and tunnels to link key areas.

Central to this vision is The Future Loop Bridge, stretching 2 km, which will connect key landmarks like the Museum of the Future, Emirates Towers, Dubai World Trade Centre, and DIFC. The upper level will be climate-regulated, while the lower area will provide shaded, landscaped open spaces to ensure pedestrian comfort throughout the year.

As Dubai propels its innovative mobility roadmap forward, these initiatives highlight one central aim—creating a sustainable, people-oriented city where innovation is woven into everyday life, ensuring that every step forward enhances the emirate’s advancement toward a smarter, cleaner, and more linked future.
