Harvard University has acknowledged a security breach involving one of its significant databases, accessed through a phone phishing attack earlier this week. The unauthorized access revealed sensitive information related to alumni, donors, as well as certain students and faculty. This incident is said to have occurred on Tuesday, focusing on data connected to fundraising and alumni-related activities.
According to university representatives, the breached database contained contact information, records of donations, and other pertinent details. While officials confirmed that academic platforms and financial accounts were not compromised, the exposure of personal data raises significant concerns for thousands associated with Harvard.
As the oldest and richest university in the U.S., Harvard consistently raises over a billion dollars each year. This occurrence marks the second cyberspace investigation for the university in 2025, following inquiries in October regarding a major hacking event targeting a well-known software provider.
Tim Bailey, director of communications for Harvard University Information Technology, stated that immediate action was taken upon discovering the breach. Access was swiftly revoked, and cybersecurity experts were engaged to enhance protective measures. The university is also collaborating with law enforcement as the probe unfolds.
Harvard is among several elite U.S. universities facing cyber threats. Recently, other Ivy League institutions reported similar breaches. Notably, Princeton University disclosed that a database containing information about alumni and donors was compromised on November 15. Furthermore, the University of Pennsylvania reported breaches affecting alumni and development systems on October 31.
In June, Columbia University faced a notable cybersecurity breach, exposing personal information of nearly 870,000 individuals, including students and applicants.
Experts in cybersecurity suggest that American universities are prime targets due to the vast amounts of personal and financial data stored. With recent incidents affecting multiple prestigious institutions, there's increasing urgency for universities to bolster digital security and safeguard sensitive information more effectively.
