Gaza Floods Worsen Crisis Amid Ongoing Airstrikes

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has raised alarm over a sharp deterioration in humanitarian conditions in the Gaza Strip. Heavy rainfall has flooded the tents and temporary shelters of at least 120 families, compounding the challenges posed by ongoing military strikes and growing concerns over civilian safety.

On Wednesday, airstrikes reportedly damaged or destroyed around 45 displacement shelters in Deir Al Balah. Initial field assessments by UN teams and partner organizations, conducted on Thursday morning, are focusing on identifying the most severely affected areas to coordinate rapid relief responses.

Humanitarian teams are working urgently to provide support, including plastic sheeting and flooring materials, to the displaced families whose homes have been inundated.

OCHA highlighted that relief operations face significant obstacles, reflecting the broader humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Persistent restrictions on the import of essential materials and major disruptions in supply chains are severely limiting the ability to provide timely aid and sustainable solutions to affected populations.

Authorities and relief agencies continue to call for immediate international assistance to address the dual crises of flooding and ongoing conflict, emphasizing the urgent need to protect civilians and restore basic living conditions.
