Israeli Airstrike Eliminates Hezbollah Leader Abbas Karky in Lebanon

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

A significant escalation was marked in southern Lebanon as an Israeli airstrike resulted in the death of Hezbollah leader Abbas Hassan Karky on Friday, confirmed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Karky, who was the logistics commander for Hezbollah's Southern Front, was targeted in the Nabatieh region.

This strike comes amid rising tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border, despite an ongoing ceasefire established on November 27, 2024. The IDF reported that Karky had spearheaded initiatives to restore Hezbollah's military infrastructure, manage the transfer and storage of arms, and repair damaged facilities, labeling him as a pivotal target due to his strategic importance.

According to Lebanon’s National News Agency, Karky was killed when an Israeli attack struck his vehicle in Nabatieh. A Lebanese security source corroborated Karky’s role in Hezbollah, though further details were not disclosed. Local media revealed that Karky was related to Ali Karaki, who formerly led Hezbollah’s Southern Front and was killed alongside prominent figure Hassan Nasrallah last year.

Karky's assassination follows a series of Israeli assaults targeting Hezbollah installations across Lebanon, including weapons depots and training sites. Lebanese sources have reported at least four casualties from these operations, which also included the death of an elderly woman. On Wednesday, Israel announced the elimination of a platoon commander from Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force for involvement in weapon transfers and planning attacks.

Despite a ceasefire largely averting large-scale hostilities, the IDF’s targeted operations persist, citing threats posed by Hezbollah along the border. The recent killing of Karky highlights the fragile security climate in southern Lebanon and ongoing tensions between the two entities.

Experts suggest that Karky's death may significantly disrupt Hezbollah's operational capabilities in the south, given his key role in restoring the group’s military setup. Analysts caution that such targeted strikes could lead to increased retaliatory actions, maintaining a tense atmosphere in southern Lebanon.
