Hyderabad Families Grieve Following Fatal Bus Accident in Saudi Arabia

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Hyderabad, Nov 17, 2025: A horrific bus crash in Saudi Arabia has taken the lives of at least 42 Indian pilgrims, predominantly from Hyderabad. The incident occurred when a bus on its way from Mecca to Medina collided with a diesel tanker in the early hours of Monday, igniting a fire that engulfed the vehicle. The tragedy has led to profound sorrow and alarm among families and prompted swift reactions from Indian officials.

Initial reports indicate that the bus met with the accident around 1:30 am IST while transporting passengers from Mecca to Medina. Many were reportedly asleep, preventing an escape as flames consumed the bus. The casualties included women and children, with ongoing verification of the exact figures. Early reports suggest that only one individual survived the crash.

As news of the accident surfaced, relatives in Hyderabad hurried to the premises of Al Makkah Tours and Travels, the agency that organized the pilgrimage, seeking details and assistance. “Seven of my family members were on that bus. We were informed of the accident this morning, and it’s devastating,” shared one distressed family member.

The Indian Consulate in Jeddah has characterized the incident as a “tragic” event and has established a 24-hour control room to aid the affected families. Officials are collaborating with Saudi authorities, the Haj and Umrah Ministry, and relevant travel organizations to ensure that the deceased are identified, and medical support is provided. Additionally, community volunteers have been mobilized at hospitals and accident sites near Medina.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, currently in Russia, echoed his sorrow over the incident. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he mentioned, “Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are offering full support to Indian nationals and families impacted by this tragedy. My heartfelt condolences to all bereaved families. May those injured recover swiftly.”

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy expressed his condolences and directed local officials to collaborate with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Saudi Embassy. A control room has been set up at the Telangana Secretariat to keep families informed and monitor relief efforts.

Hyderabad MP and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi confirmed he is in contact with officials from the Indian mission in Riyadh. “They are collecting information. I have reached out to two travel agencies in Hyderabad to share passenger details with the Embassy and the Foreign Secretary,” he stated. Owaisi appealed for the government to guarantee adequate medical care for the injured and facilitate the repatriation of the deceased.

This tragic bus incident highlights the risks that pilgrims face while traveling, particularly on busy routes connecting sacred cities like Mecca and Medina. It not only represents a profound personal tragedy but also raises critical concerns about travel safety regulations and readiness for Indian nationals abroad.

Investigations and support initiatives by authorities in both Saudi Arabia and India are ongoing, focusing on providing immediate aid to victims’ families and ensuring accountability for travel safety. As news circulates on social media, an outpouring of condolences and calls for enhanced safety measures for pilgrims abroad have emerged.
