Tragic Tejas Fighter Jet Crash Claims IAF Pilot at Dubai Air Show

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Wing Commander Namansh Syal of the Indian Air Force tragically lost his life on Friday when the Tejas fighter aircraft he was piloting crashed during a demonstration at the Dubai Air Show, near Al Maktoum International Airport.

Final Moments with Indian Officials

Footage captured before the incident shows Syal in conversation with key Indian dignitaries, including:

  • The Minister of State for Defence

  • Deepak Mittal, India’s Ambassador to the UAE

  • Aseem R Mahajan, Additional Secretary (Gulf)

At just 34, Syal hailed from Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh and is survived by his wife, also an IAF officer, their six-year-old daughter, and his parents. Family members described him as dedicated and humble, with a promotion anticipated soon.

Circumstances Surrounding the Incident

The accident occurred around 2:10 pm local time as the Tejas, a single-seat Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, performed aerobatics. Witnesses report that the pilot lost control during a low-altitude negative-G manoeuvre.

Video footage from the air show captured the aircraft's abrupt descent leading up to the crash.

Official Inquiry Announced

The Indian Air Force has expressed profound sorrow regarding Syal's death and has initiated a court of inquiry to investigate the circumstances of the crash. The IAF has reaffirmed its support for Syal's family during this tough time.

Not the First Tejas Incident

This marks the second Tejas crash within two years; the first incident occurred in March last year in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, where the pilot managed to eject safely. Designed for high performance, the Tejas is India's indigenous light combat aircraft and participates in numerous air shows worldwide.
