The historic 27th General Conference of the International Council of Museums (ICOM Dubai 2025) has successfully concluded, marking a significant milestone as it took place in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia for the first time. Under the esteemed patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, over 4,500 attendees from across the globe participated, further establishing Dubai as a key cultural hub.
With the theme “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities,” the event gathered an array of museum leaders, cultural professionals, policymakers, and institutions for a week of engaging discussions and knowledge-sharing. The agenda featured over 100 sessions and workshops, examining how museums can respond to cultural shifts, technological advancements, and changing public expectations while honoring community values and heritage.
A highlight of the concluding day was the session “The Spirit of Exchange: The UAE’s Unique View on Cultural Diplomacy.” This session showcased the UAE’s cultural evolution driven by unity, growth, and cross-regional collaboration. Speakers emphasized that the UAE’s cultural cooperation continues to enhances the region’s global creative stature.
Throughout the conference, the discussion focused on the crucial role of museums as venues for dialogue, education, and connection. Sessions like “The Power of Narrative, Heritage, and Youth” investigated how cultural institutions can facilitate inclusive spaces that amplify young voices and diverse narratives. Other panels tackled themes of post-conflict recovery, innovative practices, and the responsibilities of curating heritage amid ongoing change.
ICOM Dubai 2025 also served as a pivotal platform for global partnerships, with delegations from prominent cultural organizations across the UAE, GCC, Europe, Africa, and Asia engaging in networking sessions to share expertise and forge lasting partnerships. The event included youth-centric sessions and specialized workshops that provided attendees with practical skills to enhance their institutions.
The closing ceremony witnessed several remarkable achievements: the election of Antonio Rodriguez as President of ICOM, the selection of Rotterdam as the host city for ICOM 2028, and the launch of the inaugural ICOM Sustainability Award, honoring innovative efforts in sustainable development within the museum sector.
With its extensive global participation and future-focused programming, ICOM Dubai 2025 has provided a unique platform for cultural interaction. As attendees departed, they carried with them a collective vision that elevates museums as central figures in community identity and the cultural future of our world.
