On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, India and Ethiopia made a landmark decision by forging a strategic partnership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali outlined new avenues for collaboration across various sectors such as economy, technology, defence, healthcare, and education.
During their pivotal discussions, PM Modi announced plans to double the number of scholarships available for Ethiopian students seeking education in India. He also expressed gratitude for Ethiopia's support in combating terrorism.
PM Ali underscored India's status as Ethiopia's largest foreign investor, with more than 615 Indian companies operating in the region. The two leaders emphasized their mutual interests and the importance of South-South collaboration, asserting that this partnership will create fresh opportunities for both countries.
PM Modi was also immersed in Ethiopia’s vibrant culture, taking part in a traditional coffee ceremony and visiting sites like Friendship Park and the Science Museum. The Indian community in Addis Ababa offered him a warm and heartfelt welcome.
On December 17, PM Modi is set to address Ethiopia’s Parliament, elaborating on the India-Ethiopia partnership and its relevance for the Global South. This visit is part of his broader tour to three countries, including Jordan and Oman.
