Indian Ministers Promote Domestic Apps as US Ties Strain

Indian Ministers Promote Domestic Apps as US Ties Strain

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

India’s government is encouraging the use of domestic apps instead of foreign alternatives from Google, Microsoft, and WhatsApp. This comes amid strained trade relations with the United States and a push for more “Made in India” products, also called Swade goods.

Three cabinet ministers, including Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, are leading the effort by showcasing Indian software tools in government work and asking citizens to adopt local solutions.

India recently faced a 50% tariff on exports to the US, which increased pressure on the government to promote local products. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been actively asking Indians to use domestic goods and reduce dependence on foreign technology.

Minister Ashwini Vaishnawgave a presentationZoho, an Indian alternative to Microsoft PowerPoint, instead of Microsoft software. He also used MapmyIndia, an Indian mapping service, instead of Google Maps.

Vaishnaw highlighted the benefits of local tools in a video posted on social media platform X, which received 6.2 million views. He encouraged citizens to adopt Swadeshi apps to support India’s technology industry.

Indian Alternatives to Popular Foreign Apps

Some examples of Indian alternatives include:

Zoho – A suite of cloud-based software tools competing with Microsoft Office.

MapmyIndia – A mapping service that competes with Google Maps.

Arattai – A messaging app by Zoho, promoted by Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

These apps are gaining popularity, especially in government and rural offices. Zoho’s co-founder Sridhar Vembu is known for setting up company operations in rural villages, promoting local development.

Lost

Despite the push, foreign tech companies remain very popular in India.

WhatsApp has over 500 million users in India, making it the largest market for the app.

Google Maps and Microsoft software are widely used in both government and private offices.

Replacing these widely adopted tools is a challenge, and many Indians see US products as aspirational or high-quality upgrades. It may take time for domestic apps to match the reach and convenience of these foreign tools.

Government Goals and Impact

The ministers’ campaign shows a strong effort to boost India’s digital independence. Promoting Swadeshi apps can:

Support local businesses and technology companies.

Reduce dependency on foreign software and services.

Encourage innovation and development within India.

By using homegrown apps, the government hopes citizens and businesses will gradually adopt Indian solutions for everyday digital tasks.
