Indian Nurse Sentenced for Assaulting Visitor in Singapore Hospital

Indian Nurse Sentenced for Assaulting Visitor in Singapore Hospital

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

A nurse from India, Elipe Siva Nagu, has been sentenced to 14 months in prison for the molestation of a male visitor at a leading hospital in Singapore, raising serious concerns regarding trust within healthcare. The 34-year-old pleaded guilty to the charges and was also ordered to receive two strokes of the cane.

The incident, which took place in June at Raffles Hospital, involved the victim visiting his grandfather. Nagu allegedly used a false pretext of wanting to “disinfect” the visitor by applying soap, before perpetrating the assault. The victim, who was reportedly taken aback, was unable to react during the incident and later suffered from flashbacks.

Immediately after the offense, Nagu was suspended from his nursing role. Deputy Public Prosecutor Eugene Phua informed the court that the incident occurred while the victim was using a patient’s bathroom. To protect the identity of the victim, details such as his age were kept confidential in court.

Nagu's arrest occurred just two days after the incident was reported on June 21. The court strongly condemned the actions, highlighting the significant breach of trust that healthcare professionals hold. The sentencing serves as a critical reminder of the necessity for accountability and safety in healthcare environments.

The case has raised alarms regarding hospital security and the ethical obligations of healthcare staff towards both patients and visitors. Hospital authorities have committed to reinforcing measures to avoid such incidents moving forward.
