In a significant gesture ahead of Idul Adha, Indonesia has successfully repatriated 190 citizens from Malaysia, enabling families to reunite after their detainment in immigration facilities. This repatriation was organized by the Indonesian Consulate General in Johor Bahru and involved two ferry journeys to Batam in the Riau Islands.
The group comprised 131 men, 51 women, four seniors, and four minors. Many among them were migrant workers or undocumented Indonesian nationals held due to immigration infractions. The majority hailed from regions such as East Java, North Sumatra, Aceh, Bengkulu, and West Nusa Tenggara.
These citizens were previously detained at various immigration centers located in Kemayan, Pahang; Pekan Nenas, Johor; and Lenggeng, Negeri Sembilan. Indonesian and Malaysian officials collaborated for a smooth, humane return prior to the Islamic festivities.
The first batch of 150 was transported on Friday via the MDM Express ferry from Pasir Gudang Port, while 40 individuals arrived on Monday on the Citra Legacy 5 ferry from Stulang Laut Port. Both groups were received safely at Batam Center Port with assistance from consular staff and local authorities.
Commissioner Riza Sativa emphasized that ensuring safe, dignified treatment of the deportees was a top priority throughout the operation, highlighting the focus on compassion and legal due process in these situations.
The repatriation comes at a crucial time as millions of Indonesians get ready for Idul Adha, marking a vital humanitarian mission to facilitate the return of those most in need, including elderly individuals and children.
Indonesia and Malaysia share significant economic connections, with numerous Indonesians employed across various sectors in Malaysia. However, issues surrounding undocumented migration and labor law violations persist, challenging both governments.
This repatriation serves as a reminder of the ongoing necessity for improved protections for migrant workers, pathways to legal employment, and fostering stronger cooperation between Indonesia and Malaysia to enhance labor conditions and ensure humane treatment for migrant workers in the region.
