In Bandung, West Java, a significant trial has commenced involving 19 suspects linked to a baby trafficking network that reportedly victimized at least 34 infants. Among these, 10 babies were sold to individuals in Singapore for up to S$18,000 each. The accused, which includes 18 women and a lone man, are confronting severe charges under Indonesia's laws governing human trafficking.
Prosecutors presenting the case at the Bandung District Court indicated that the illegal operations ran from 2023 to 2025. Allegations suggest that an individual from Singapore approached one of the defendants, identified as Lie Siu Luan, or Lily, for help in finding babies for adoption. The syndicate supposedly generated counterfeit documents, such as birth certificates and IDs, to facilitate these unlawful transactions.
Investigations reveal that the accused exploited vulnerable parents via social media and online adoption forums. Reportedly, some parents received between nine million and 15 million rupiah in exchange for their newborns. Prosecutors claim that the syndicate developed fake identities and arranged counterfeit guardians to mislead authorities and prospective adoptive couples.
Authorities disclosed that at least 10 infants were sent to Singapore by operatives posing as their parents or guardians. The rest of the children were sold within Indonesia or placed in orphanages if no buyers were accessible. Convictions could lead to significant prison terms ranging from three to 15 years, along with substantial fines. This troubling case has garnered much attention, surfacing issues related to poverty, the lack of awareness about legal adoption methods, and the alarming role of social media in enabling cross-border trafficking ramifications.
