Inside the Argo Rescue: How Six Americans Were Evacuated from Tehran

Post by : Meena Hassan

On November 4, 1979, Iranian revolutionaries stormed the US Embassy in Tehran and took 66 Americans hostage, angered by US backing of the deposed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Tensions soared after the United States admitted the exiled Shah for medical treatment, helping spark the embassy takeover.

Amid the hostage crisis, six embassy staff slipped out through a rear exit and found sanctuary with Canadian diplomats Robert Anders, John Sheardown and Ambassador Kenneth Taylor, staying hidden while Iranian authorities searched for Americans.

Enter Tony Mendez: The Man With a Plan

The CIA initially judged a rescue too risky until exfiltration specialist Tony Mendez proposed an unorthodox solution. He created a cover involving a bogus Hollywood production — a science-fiction project titled Argo — supported by fake production materials, press activity and forged paperwork to make the story plausible.

Mendez traveled to Tehran using an assumed identity, coordinated closely with Canadian officials, and prepared the six fugitives to assume new personas under intense pressure.

Operation ‘Canadian Caper’: Fact That Inspired Hollywood

After nearly three months of planning and risk, Mendez and the six Americans boarded a flight out of Iran on January 27, 1980. The operation, known as the ‘Canadian Caper,’ is regarded as one of the CIA’s most daring covert evacuations.

The 2012 film Argo, directed by and starring Ben Affleck as Mendez, dramatized the episode and highlighted contributors such as makeup artist John Chambers and Canadian Ambassador Kenneth Taylor.

While the movie condensed and dramatized some details, it reflected the bravery, ingenuity and cross-border cooperation that made the real-life extraction a successful and memorable intelligence operation.
