IPL 2026 Final Transferred from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad Amid VIP Ticket Controversy

IPL 2026 Final Transferred from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad Amid VIP Ticket Controversy

Post by : Shweta

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has moved the IPL 2026 final from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad, stemming from significant disputes over VIP ticket requests and logistical issues. Initially set to occur at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, the final is now scheduled for May 31 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. This alteration has sparked political debates and ignited reactions from cricket enthusiasts throughout Karnataka.

Sources indicate that the primary conflict arose from the requests for numerous complimentary tickets for key government figures and politicians. BCCI officials reportedly faced compulsion regarding free ticket distribution for MLAs, MLCs, MPs, and various VIP attendees. Considering the Chinnaswamy Stadium accommodates around 40,000 spectators, officials believed it would be challenging to harmonize public ticket sales with sponsors and VIP expectations.

BCCI vice-president Arun Dhumal remarked that Bengaluru was initially slated to host the final since the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, typically gain hosting rights for the inaugural match and the final. However, following deliberations with the Karnataka State Cricket Association and local authorities, the board recognized that managing the situation under current regulations was becoming increasingly untenable.

Reports suggested that there were demands for nearly 10,000 complimentary tickets beyond the standard allocation. The BCCI allegedly deemed these requests excessive for a stadium with limited seating options. Furthermore, officials highlighted that IPL finals draw international guests, business partners, sponsors, and ICC delegates, necessitating a larger venue with better ticket availability.

The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which can accommodate over 130,000 spectators, emerged as a more viable option for such a prominent event. This stadium has previously hosted numerous significant cricket finals, including IPL and ICC tournaments. BCCI officials believe the larger capacity in Ahmedabad will facilitate improved crowd control, enhanced security measures, and better ticket distribution for fans.

This venue shift has ignited political controversy in Karnataka, with opposition representatives accusing the state government of permitting “VIP culture” to undermine Bengaluru’s chance to hold one of the year’s premier cricket matches. Janata Dal (Secular) youth chief Nikhil Kumaraswamy condemned the escalating influence of political pressures in sports, arguing that venues should prioritize passionate cricket fans over privileged access for the elite.

State authorities in Karnataka have refuted claims that political ticket pressures influenced the decision. They contend that Ahmedabad’s substantially larger stadium and commercial benefits likely played a decisive role in the BCCI’s final determination. Officials further noted that there had been no significant security concerns during IPL matches in Bengaluru this season.

Apart from the VIP ticket dilemma, additional reports indicated apprehensions regarding crowd management and safety following a tragic stampede during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru celebrations in 2025. Despite local cricket officials asserting preparedness to host the final, BCCI officials evidently favored a venue with greater logistical flexibility and superior infrastructure for the tournament's marquee match.

With this venue change, Ahmedabad will host the IPL final for the fourth time in the last five years, solidifying its status as India’s prime location for major cricket events. Meanwhile, many fans in Bengaluru took to social media to express their dismay, asserting that political meddling and VIP pressures led to the city losing a significant sporting event.
