Khamenei Killed In US-Israel Strike On Tehran

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been killed following large-scale joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on targets in Tehran, according to Iranian state media.

State broadcaster Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) announced early Sunday that the 86-year-old leader had “reached martyrdom.” Reports said he was killed in his office during an early morning strike on Saturday.

The confirmation came after US and Israeli officials stated that Khamenei had died in coordinated airstrikes targeting high-value military and governmental sites across the Iranian capital. Israeli media, including The Times of Israel, cited senior officials as saying his body had been recovered from his compound. Israel’s Channel 12 reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was shown images of the body after it was retrieved.

Trump Announces Strike Success

US President Donald Trump confirmed Khamenei’s death in a post on X, calling it “the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their Country.” He described the operation as a coordinated US-Israel effort aimed at eliminating what he termed a long-standing threat posed by Iran’s leadership.

In a separate post on Truth Social, Trump said intelligence agencies had closely tracked Khamenei’s movements and claimed there had been no opportunity for escape. He added that aerial bombardment would continue “as long as necessary” to achieve broader regional security objectives.

Shortly after Trump’s statement, a message appeared on Khamenei’s official X account in Persian, invoking a religious phrase and casting uncertainty before state media formally confirmed his death.

Senior Iranian Officials Also Reported Killed

According to multiple sources cited by Reuters, several top Iranian officials were killed in the strikes. Among them were Defence Minister Amir Nasirzadeh and Revolutionary Guards commander Mohammed Pakpour. Israel’s military said at least five other senior commanders had also been eliminated, including Ali Shamkhani, a key adviser to the Supreme Leader.

Iranian media further reported that members of Khamenei’s family, including his daughter and close relatives, were also killed in the attack, though independent confirmation remains limited.

Tehran has condemned the strikes as illegal and unprovoked. In response, Iran launched missile attacks targeting Israel and several countries hosting US military bases in the Gulf region, escalating fears of a broader regional conflict.

A Leadership Vacuum In Tehran

Khamenei, who had led Iran since 1989, held ultimate authority over the government, armed forces, and judiciary. His death creates significant uncertainty within the country’s power structure. Unlike his predecessor, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, Khamenei had not publicly designated a clear successor, raising questions about the next phase of leadership in the Islamic Republic.

Initially seen as a compromise choice after Khomeini’s death, Khamenei consolidated power over more than three decades, tightening control over domestic politics and shaping Iran’s foreign policy with a firm anti-Western stance.

Throughout his tenure, he clashed repeatedly with Washington and supported policies that critics say deepened Iran’s international isolation. Even as protests periodically erupted across the country, he maintained a hardline position, rejecting external pressure and warning against foreign intervention.

Regional Tensions Intensify

The strikes and Khamenei’s death mark one of the most dramatic escalations in US-Iran tensions in decades. Analysts warn that the absence of a designated successor, combined with retaliatory threats from Tehran, could lead to prolonged instability.

With missile exchanges already under way and regional allies on high alert, the coming days are expected to be critical for the Middle East’s security landscape.
