Iran Claims Supreme Leader Suffered Only Minor Injuries in U.S.-Israel Strikes

Post by : Shweta

An official from the Iranian health department has stated that Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei only sustained “superficial” wounds during the airstrikes conducted by the U.S. and Israel in late February. This marks one of the first comprehensive public remarks regarding Khamenei’s condition since the attacks, which also resulted in the deaths of several key Iranian leaders, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Spokesman for the Health Ministry, Hossein Kermanpour, noted that Khamenei received minor injuries to his face, head, and legs but asserted that they were not serious, requiring merely basic medical attention, such as a few stitches. He emphasized that there were no major physical injuries or long-term health issues.

This statement comes amidst ongoing speculation regarding Khamenei’s health and whereabouts. Mojtaba Khamenei has not made any public appearances since assuming the role of Supreme Leader on March 8, primarily communicating via written messages. His absence from media broadcasts and public gatherings has fueled rumors of severe injuries or an inability to govern effectively.

The February airstrikes formed part of a significant military operation carried out by the United States and Israel during the 2026 Iran conflict. Reports from Iranian state media confirmed that former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was killed in these strikes alongside several senior military and security figures. This operation led to severe reprisals from Iran and heightened tensions throughout the Middle East.

In statements from March, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth suggested that Mojtaba Khamenei was alive but possibly disfigured and injured. Iranian officials dismissed these claims vigorously, labeling them as exaggerated and politically charged. The recent pronouncement from the Health Ministry seems designed to counteract rising international speculation and reassure citizens about the Supreme Leader’s status.

Sources suggest that Khamenei continues to manage Iran through secure communication, albeit under tight security measures. It is reported that Iranian authorities have minimized his public engagements due to concerns about potential assassination attempts or intelligence maneuvers directed at the nation's leadership.

This issue holds significant political weight as Iran navigates delicate negotiations with the United States over sanctions and nuclear issues, as well as regional security matters. Analysts contend that the uncertainty surrounding the Supreme Leader's health has influenced internal decision-making and slowed some diplomatic conversations.

Despite Iran’s recent assertions, international worries regarding Mojtaba Khamenei’s health and capability to lead persist, particularly amid ongoing military and political challenges. Nonetheless, Iranian officials maintain that the nation’s leadership structure remains stable and fully operational after the tragic events of earlier this year.
