Iran Refutes Claims of Indian Arrests Amid Ongoing Protests

Post by : Meena Hassan

Iran has categorically denied allegations suggesting that Iranian police detained six Indian nationals during widespread anti-government protests affecting Tehran and other cities.

Iran’s Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, labeled these reports as untrue and urged citizens to depend solely on trustworthy sources for news regarding the nation. In a statement via social media platform X, he pointed out that false information is being disseminated by foreign accounts regarding Iran’s internal matters, describing the circulated reports as entirely misleading and encouraging the public to source information from credible outlets.

The country is engulfed in extensive protests triggered by escalating living costs, rampant inflation, and the swift decline of its national currency, the rial. This currency has plummeted to record lows, exacerbating public discontent over economic adversity, unemployment, and the ramifications of international sanctions. Initially aimed at addressing economic issues, protests have evolved into a direct challenge against the Iranian Islamic leadership, notably Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei.

Demonstrations have erupted across various provinces, with significant gatherings reported in Tehran, Mashhad, Kerman, and other major urban areas. Protesters are expressing their dissatisfaction with inflation, governance issues, and diminishing living standards.

Reports indicate that at least 544 individuals have died during the government’s crackdown on these protests, with over 10,600 reported detentions in the last fortnight. Most fatalities are alleged to be among protesters, although some security forces members have also died. While Iranian authorities have not released official counts, state media has broadcast funerals of deceased security personnel along with visuals of unrest in certain areas.

Information verification from within Iran is becoming increasingly difficult due to significant internet restrictions and disrupted phone services. Activists and human rights organizations express concerns that this communication blackout has allowed hardline elements in security forces to escalate their actions against demonstrators.

The situation has garnered international attention, with the United States actively observing developments. US President Donald Trump has indicated that various responses, including cyber actions and potential military options, are under consideration concerning Iran's treatment of the protests. He cautioned that drastic measures could ensue if the situation continues to deteriorate.

In retaliation, senior Iranian officials have conveyed that any foreign involvement would prompt a response. Iranian leaders have stated that American military bases and Israeli interests within the region would be seen as valid targets if military force is employed against Iran. The hardline sentiments have intensified within Iran’s parliament, where lawmakers have openly criticized the US and Israel, issuing pre-emptive action warnings.

Despite the government’s firm stance, protests sporadically erupt, with videos surfacing online of demonstrators gathering at night, utilizing mobile phone lights, chanting, and confronting security personnel in various neighborhoods.

Reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian has recognized the public's grievances but affirmed that the government would not permit what he referred to as "rioters" to disrupt national stability.

As economic strains intensify and political discord rises, Iran is confronted with one of its most serious domestic challenges in recent years, with the situation remaining precarious and closely monitored by the global community.
