Islamabad Attack: Pakistani Taliban Claims Responsibility

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The Pakistani Taliban, or Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), has asserted responsibility for the tragic suicide bombing that struck Islamabad on Tuesday, leading to the deaths of at least 12 individuals while injuring numerous others.

This attack targeted the judicial commission complex in the capital, with TTP stating it specifically aimed at judges, lawyers, and officials purportedly enforcing 'un-Islamic laws' in the nation. The group has signaled that similar attacks will persist until Sharia law is fully instituted in Pakistan.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that the explosion occurred in proximity to a police vehicle outside the complex, inciting chaos among bystanders.

Witnesses described scenes of destruction. 'Everyone began to flee in fear. I saw at least five bodies near the entrance,' recalled lawyer Mohammed Shahzad Butt. Another lawyer, Rustam Malik, remarked on hearing a 'loud bang' upon entering the building, as cars were set ablaze and people cried for assistance.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif labeled the suicide bombing a 'wake-up call' for Pakistan, stressing the critical need for national unity and reinforced counterterrorism strategies. 'In this situation, expecting successful negotiations with Kabul's rulers would be meaningless,' he added, alluding to escalating tensions at the border with Afghanistan.

This bombing represents the first significant suicide attack in Pakistan since December 2022. Authorities indicate a resurgence in militant violence, largely tied to armed factions operating from Afghan territory.

Last month, violent clashes occurred along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, resulting in over 70 fatalities, including civilians, according to reports from the United Nations.

The Islamabad incident follows another tragic event in Delhi, where a vehicle explosion claimed nine lives and harmed 20 others, instigating regional anxieties about the growing threat of extremism throughout South Asia.

In response to the suicide bombing, Pakistani authorities have enhanced security measures in vital government areas, judicial institutions, and public venues while investigations into the incident continue.
