Shehbaz Sharif Holds Talks With Iran, Qatar to Support US-Iran Peace

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held separate telephone conversations with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Friday night as diplomatic efforts continued to revive the stalled US-Iran negotiations.

During both discussions, Sharif expressed deep concern over the recent rise in regional tensions and urged all sides to avoid actions that could threaten the ongoing peace process. He stressed the importance of protecting the progress made under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which was signed to promote peace and stability.

Sharif Discusses Regional Stability With Iran

In his call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Sharif highlighted the urgent need to restore peace and stability across the region, according to a statement issued by Pakistan's Prime Minister's Office.

He called on all parties to exercise restraint and refrain from taking any steps that could undermine the peace achieved in recent months. Sharif also emphasized the importance of honoring the commitments made under the Islamabad MoU, describing it as a long-term framework designed to encourage mutual understanding, respect, and shared prosperity.

Reaffirming Pakistan's commitment to regional peace, Sharif said Islamabad was prepared to continue playing an honest and sincere role in supporting dialogue and efforts aimed at maintaining stability.

Iran Appreciates Pakistan's Support

President Pezeshkian thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and other senior Pakistani officials for attending the funeral ceremony of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

He also reaffirmed Iran's commitment to peace and appreciated Pakistan's constructive role and sincere efforts to promote regional stability.

The two leaders reviewed the progress on decisions taken during Pezeshkian's visit to Islamabad last month and agreed to accelerate follow-up actions to strengthen bilateral cooperation in several sectors. They also agreed to remain in close contact and continue consultations on matters related to regional peace and issues of mutual interest.

Separate Call Held With Qatar's Emir

In a separate telephone conversation, Sharif spoke with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and again expressed deep concern over the recent escalation in regional tensions.

He conveyed Pakistan's solidarity with the people of Qatar following the recent attacks and stressed that all parties should exercise restraint and avoid actions that could disrupt peace in the region.

Sharif also thanked the Qatari leader for his continued support for the diplomatic efforts that resulted in the Islamabad MoU and the first round of high-level technical talks held in Burgenstock.

Both leaders agreed that sustained diplomacy and continued dialogue remain essential. They also emphasized the need for all parties to honor the commitments made under the peace memorandum.

Islamabad MoU Aims to Keep Peace Process Alive

The United States and Iran signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding on June 18 with the objective of restoring peace in West Asia. The agreement was followed by technical-level talks in Switzerland on June 21, with Pakistan and Qatar serving as mediators.

Sharif's latest conversations with the leaders of Iran and Qatar are part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to keep the peace process on track and support regional stability.
