Prominent writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar has taken Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to task over a contentious incident involving a Muslim woman at a public event in Patna. Akhtar has stated that the chief minister owes an unqualified apology to the woman whose veil was removed without her permission.
This incident occurred during an official gathering known as Samvad at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, where appointment letters were distributed to newly selected candidates. A widely shared video from this event shows Nitish Kumar questioning the woman’s naqab and subsequently removing it himself.
The footage quickly ignited a political and social uproar across India, with many accusing the chief minister of undermining personal choice, religious customs, and a woman’s dignity. The issue has garnered criticism beyond India, drawing reactions from certain West Asian nations.
Responding to the uproar, Javed Akhtar expressed his sentiments on the social media platform X, emphasizing that while he has consistently opposed the traditional notion of parda or face-covering, he does not condone the act of forcibly removing it from anyone.
He asserted that personal beliefs should never be used as a justification for humiliating or touching someone against their will. He deemed the act intolerable and stressed that the woman should be treated with respect. According to him, simply disagreeing with a custom does not provide anyone the right to insult those who adhere to it.
The lyricist also addressed allegations of “selective outrage” directed at him. He refuted these claims, stating that he has always opposed regressive attitudes, including within his own community. He urged critics to identify any of his films where women are portrayed disrespectfully.
Akhtar has frequently championed women’s rights and dignity. At a literary event earlier this year, he raised questions on why a woman should feel ashamed of her face, stating that dignity does not hinge on whether one is covered or uncovered.
This incident has placed increasing pressure on Nitish Kumar and his party, with opposition leaders and social activists calling for an apology and accountability. The controversy has reignited a broader discussion on personal choice, respect for religious practices, and the conduct expected from public officials.
As the dialogue persists, many advocate that the emphasis should remain on mutual respect and consent, particularly when actions stem from those in authority.
