European Tourist Fined AED 15,000 for Jewellery Theft in Dubai

Post by : Bianca Haleem

A European tourist has received a fine of AED 15,000 after being caught on CCTV stealing a gold necklace from a jewellery store in Dubai. This incident raises questions about retail security measures and the enforcement of theft laws in the city.

The theft took place in March 2025, when the woman reportedly placed a necklace worth AED 10,000 into her handbag and exited the store. Staff members quickly realized the item was missing, leading them to check the surveillance recording. The video clearly showed her actions, prompting immediate police intervention.

Dubai Police located the suspect using her vehicle information and arrested her soon after. During questioning, she confessed to the theft, attributing her actions to emotional turmoil following her sister's passing. Her attorney appealed for mercy, detailing her challenging circumstances.

The Dubai Misdemeanours and Violations Court found clear evidence of intent to steal. She was fined AED 5,000 and was required to pay AED 10,000 in compensation for the stolen necklace, totaling AED 15,000. The presiding judge remarked that despite her emotional distress, she was fully aware of her actions.

This case illustrates Dubai's unwavering stance on retail theft, demonstrating the effectiveness of advanced surveillance and investigative methods in promoting accountability.
