Los Angeles: Musician Cleto Escobedo III, renowned as the bandleader for Jimmy Kimmel Live! and childhood companion to the host, has tragically passed away at 59. The sad news was shared by Kimmel, who posted a touching tribute on social media, referring to Escobedo as a “great friend, father, and musician.”
Kimmel took to Instagram on Tuesday afternoon, posting a heartfelt image of Cleto along with a thoughtful note. “Early this morning, we lost a great friend, father, son, musician, and man — my longtime bandleader Cleto Escobedo III. To say that we are heartbroken is an understatement,” Kimmel shared.
Kimmel elaborated on their deep bond, stating: “Cleto and I have been inseparable since I was nine years old. To work together every day was a dream we never thought would materialize. Treasure your friends and please keep Cleto’s wife, kids, and parents in your thoughts and prayers.”
While the cause of his death has not been disclosed, Kimmel’s emotional message has received an outpouring of support from celebrities and fans alike.
Singer and dancer Paula Abdul also expressed her sorrow, reminiscing about their early years performing together. “My heart is heavy today as we say goodbye to the incredible Cleto Escobedo III. I first met Cleto when he was playing sax in a small bar at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. His talent and energy were undeniable,” she reminisced, thanking him for being a part of her first world tour.
A native of Las Vegas, Escobedo had known Kimmel since they were young. Their friendship blossomed into a professional partnership when Kimmel launched Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2003, ultimately leading to Cleto directing Cleto and the Cletones, the show's house band.
With a warm presence and remarkable versatility, Escobedo wielded alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones, often performing with infectious enthusiasm that became a hallmark of the show.
His passing also coincides with reports of a “personal matter” that resulted in the postponement of the Jimmy Kimmel Live! episode scheduled for November 6.
As tributes continue, fans remember Cleto Escobedo III not just as a talented musician but as a devoted friend and vibrant soul who brought joy to many through his craft.
