Match Group announced that Justin McLeod, the founder and CEO of Hinge, will step down from his role to launch a new AI-powered dating company called Overtone. The new platform, developed inside Hinge during 2025, will now operate independently and focus on using artificial intelligence and voice-based tools to help people form deeper connections. Match Group said it will support the project and sees it as an important investment in the future of digital dating.
Jackie Jantos, who has been serving as Hinge’s president and chief marketing officer, will take over as the new CEO. She has played a major role in expanding Hinge to Europe and Latin America, and has led product updates aimed at attracting more Gen Z users. McLeod, meanwhile, will continue working with Overtone as its chairman and will remain an adviser to Hinge until March next year.
Match Group plans to lead Overtone’s first funding round in early 2026 and will hold a strong ownership position in the company. Analysts say this move shows Match Group’s intention to stay ahead in the fast-changing dating market. MScience analyst Chandler Willison noted that the company is making sure it does not fall behind as new AI technologies reshape how dating apps work.
McLeod started Hinge in 2011, and under his leadership, it became one of Match Group’s fastest-growing brands. The launch of Overtone reflects Match Group’s strategy of strengthening its position in traditional online dating while also investing in new experimental products. The company continues to maintain leadership with popular apps like Tinder and OkCupid, but it is also preparing for a future where AI-driven matchmaking becomes more common.
The broader dating industry is also shifting toward AI. Rivals like Bumble and Grindr have increased investments in AI tools to improve personalization and user safety, especially as many young users express frustration with traditional “swipe-based” platforms. Several new startups such as Teaser and Blush are experimenting with generative AI, using digital agents designed to simulate natural conversation and help users feel more confident when planning real-life dates.
Industry experts say the increasing use of AI comes at a time when dating platforms are facing slower growth, stronger competition, and pressure to innovate. Companies now aim to create smarter algorithms that make introductions feel more meaningful and reduce the fatigue that many users feel from repetitive swiping.
