Khalifa University of Science and Technology and The Global Institute for Disease Elimination (GLIDE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to work together on projects that aim to strengthen public health systems. The goal of this collaboration is to accelerate worldwide progress in eliminating infectious diseases while also building stronger healthcare capacity in the UAE.
MoU Signed During Public Health Symposium
The MoU was signed during the Khalifa University Public Health Symposium 2025, held at the university’s main campus in Abu Dhabi. The agreement was signed by Professor Bayan Sharif, Provost of Khalifa University, and Dr. Farida Al Hosani, Deputy CEO of GLIDE. This marked the beginning of a promising partnership between an academic leader in science and technology and a global institute dedicated to ending infectious diseases.
Areas of Collaboration
Both institutions agreed to explore collaboration in several important areas. These include knowledge exchange through GLIDE’s Disease Elimination & Eradication Course (DEEC), as well as opportunities for students and researchers under GLIDE’s Injaz Fellowship Programme. The cooperation will also include guest lectures, faculty engagement, and future joint initiatives designed to support innovation in public health and disease elimination strategies.
Shared Vision for Stronger Health Systems
Professor Bayan Sharif highlighted the importance of this partnership, noting that strong and adaptable healthcare systems are critical in today’s world. He explained that Khalifa University’s expertise in biomedical sciences, genomics, and artificial intelligence complements GLIDE’s leadership in fighting infectious diseases. Together, they aim to create a meaningful impact not only in the UAE but across the globe.
GLIDE’s Commitment to Disease Elimination
Simon Bland, CEO of GLIDE, said that the collaboration marks a major step forward in preparing the knowledge and expertise needed to eliminate infectious diseases. He emphasized that building public health capacity in the UAE and beyond will support faster and more tangible progress towards global disease elimination.
Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders
Dr. Farida Al Hosani stressed that collaboration is essential in the fight against infectious diseases. She said the MoU is about more than just research – it is also about empowering the next generation of healthcare leaders. She explained that this partnership aligns with the UAE’s vision of becoming a hub for innovation and health, and will help deliver sustainable solutions that protect communities and build a disease-free future.
Opportunities for Students and Researchers
Dr. Habiba Alsafar, Dean of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Khalifa University, added that this collaboration will create direct opportunities for students, faculty, and researchers. It will allow them to take part in programmes that address diseases directly while also helping them develop skills to face future health challenges.
The signing of the MoU between Khalifa University and GLIDE is not only a step toward stronger cooperation but also a reflection of the UAE’s growing role as a global leader in healthcare and innovation. Through shared expertise, innovative research, and educational opportunities, this partnership aims to bring the world closer to eliminating infectious diseases and protecting future generations.
