Khashoggi’s Widow Voices Anger at Trump’s Meeting with Crown Prince

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

Hanan Elatr Khashoggi, widow of the murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi, has publicly condemned U.S. President Donald Trump for his warm reception of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during a White House meeting. The event, occurring on Tuesday, was the crown prince’s first official visit to Washington following Khashoggi’s tragic killing in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018.

Expressing her distress, Hanan stated she was “upset” and “disappointed” by Trump’s defense of the crown prince despite U.S. intelligence conclusions that implicated him in her husband’s murder.

Who Was Jamal Khashoggi?

Jamal Khashoggi was a prominent Saudi journalist residing in the U.S. He wrote extensively about issues critical of the Saudi regime and was a fixture in American media.

On October 2, 2018, he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul for marriage paperwork. International investigations confirmed he was murdered and dismembered within the consulate, with his body never retrieved.

The horrific incident provoked worldwide outrage and strained diplomatic relationships between Saudi Arabia and numerous western nations.

Hanan's Reaction

In her statements to the press, Hanan criticized Trump's characterization of her husband as “controversial.” She insisted Jamal was a principled journalist striving for a brighter future for his country.

Hanan conveyed anguish that rather than addressing Khashoggi’s murder, Trump chose to laud and defend the crown prince, deepening her emotional suffering as she continues to seek justice.

Contradicting Intelligence Findings

Despite a U.S. intelligence assessment asserting that the crown prince ordered Khashoggi’s assassination, Trump insisted during the meeting that Mohammed bin Salman was unaware of what occurred, suggesting such events “happen.”

This stance has drawn criticism from human rights organizations and advocates for press freedom.

Trump's Interaction with the Press

During the gathering, a reporter pressed the crown prince about his role in Khashoggi’s death. Rather than address the query, Trump interrupted, accusing the journalist of attempting to “embarrass” his guest.

Hanan expressed disbelief that a President would reprimand a journalist for posing a question related to such a grave issue. She emphasized her husband’s commitment to free speech and the right to ask pressing questions—an exchange she believes reflects diminishing democratic principles.

Seeking Justice and Resolution

Hanan previously reached out to Trump, anticipating support in her pursuit of justice. Her pleas include:

  • The return of her husband’s remains for a suitable burial,

  • A formal apology,

  • Monetary compensation, consistent with what is typically accorded in wrongful death cases.

However, she revealed a sense of being overlooked, as she has not received any response from the White House.

Additionally, Hanan has sought a direct meeting with the crown prince to inquire about securing her husband’s remains and achieving closure.

Legal and Personal Challenges

Following Khashoggi’s death, Hanan was granted asylum in the U.S. for her protection. While grappling with emotional turmoil, she remains resolute in seeking accountability.

There are allegations from Saudi authorities questioning her legitimacy as Khashoggi’s wife due to marital registration issues, to which Hanan firmly responds that they lived as a married couple and have a right to answers.

The Political Significance of the Meeting

The Trump-Mohammed bin Salman meeting symbolizes a potential renewal in U.S.-Saudi relations post-murder. It suggests Trump’s readiness to move forward and strengthen ties, especially as substantial financial commitments from the crown prince are anticipated.

Critics raise pertinent issues:

  • Is it appropriate for the U.S. to engage with a leader linked to a journalist’s assassination?

  • Does this defense of the crown prince imply that human rights are a secondary concern?

  • How does this affect America’s reputation as a staunch advocate of democratic values?

These concerns were aptly articulated by Hanan.

The Personal Impact

For Hanan, this issue transcends politics; it is profoundly personal. Her husband was murdered, and the location of his remains remains unknown, amplifying her trauma each time leaders trivialize the matter.

She clarified her objective is not revenge but closure:

  • Properly burying her husband according to custom and dignity.

  • Gaining recognition that his murder was fundamentally wrong.

  • Ensuring no other journalist or dissident suffers the same fate.

A Message to the Global Community

Hanan articulated her concerns that powerful nations might prioritize political expediency over justice. She underscored her late husband’s values of truth, freedom, and transparency, hoping the world does not forget the injustices faced.

Hanan vowed to persist in her quest for justice, believing Jamal Khashoggi deserves the same dignity in death that he exemplified in life.
