Khashoggi's Widow Calls for Accountability as Saudi Prince Meets US Leaders

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

The widow of the late journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Hanan Elatr Khashoggi, has made an urgent plea to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for an apology and financial compensation, citing the profound impact of her husband's assassination on her life. This appeal comes as the crown prince embarks on his first significant visit to Washington since Khashoggi’s murder in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul back in 2018, an event that significantly altered global perceptions of Saudi Arabia and complicated its relationship with the United States.

Emotional Plea from the Widow Amid Crown Prince's US Visit

In a heartfelt statement on X, Hanan asserted that no amount of justification could excuse the brutal killing of her husband, who was a prominent critic of the Saudi regime and a US resident. She further tagged the US President in her message, alluding to the crown prince's recent remarks that labeled the incident a "huge mistake".

"The Crown Prince expressed regret, so it is imperative that he meets with me to apologize and provide compensation for the murder of my husband," she stated, reviving international focus on an enduring case that continues to taint Saudi Arabia’s global standing.

A Landmark Incident Transforming US–Saudi Ties

The murder of Jamal Khashoggi incited global outrage, particularly after US intelligence deemed that Prince Mohammed approved the operation—a claim that has been vehemently denied by Saudi officials. The whereabouts of Khashoggi's remains remain unknown, raising ongoing concerns about the integrity of the Saudi investigation.

Initially, five individuals received death sentences from a closed trial in Saudi Arabia, though these were later commuted, alongside prison sentences for three others. Notably, the crown prince himself faced no repercussions from the US government.

“My Life Was Obliterated” – Hanan Khashoggi's Remarks

In an interview with CNN, she reflected on the painful nature of the crown prince's visit, especially given the official honors he received in Washington. She emphasized that her husband aspired for constructive dialogue with the Saudi leadership and had insightful proposals for his nation.

Hanan also revealed that she previously sought assistance from former President Donald Trump for a financial remedy. She expressed hope that the current administration remains committed to "American values of human rights and democracy" as they strengthen relations with Riyadh.

"Justice remains elusive," she lamented, addressing the ongoing lack of real accountability for her husband's passing.

Diplomatic Progress Tainted by Past Tragedy

The crown prince's visit signals a significant chapter in US–Saudi interactions, with both nations looking to enhance cooperation in security, energy, and regional stability. Nevertheless, Hanan Khashoggi’s resurgence emphasizes how the shadow of her husband's murder still looms over discussions concerning international perspectives on Saudi governance.

For numerous human rights advocates, her continued demand for justice highlights a case they argue still suffers from a lack of transparency, accountability, and closure.
