King Abdulaziz University Hospital has successfully completed robotic-assisted coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgeries using minimally invasive techniques. This achievement marks a major advancement in cardiac surgery and demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to medical innovation and advanced patient care.
What Robotic CABG Involves
Robotic CABG is a highly advanced surgical procedure performed at select specialized centers worldwide. It allows surgeons to treat coronary artery blockages through small incisions, avoiding the need for full chest opening. Surgeons operate robotic arms from an external console, providing exceptional precision in graft placement.
Benefits Over Traditional Surgery
Compared to conventional open-heart surgery, robotic CABG offers multiple clinical advantages, including reduced pain, less bleeding, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery. In the latest cases at the hospital, patients with serious coronary artery disease recovered well and were discharged in stable condition.
Leadership of the Robotic Program
The surgeries were conducted as part of the hospital’s new robotic cardiac surgery program, led by Dr. Mazen Fatani and Dr. Abdullah Baghaffar, with contributions from Dr. Fahad Makhdoom of the Eastern Health Cluster. The program is designed to expand the hospital’s capabilities in cutting-edge cardiac treatments.
Teamwork and Clinical Excellence
The success of these procedures was made possible by a multidisciplinary team, including specialists in anesthesiology, perfusion, nursing, and intensive care. This reflects the hospital’s emphasis on team collaboration and maintaining high standards in clinical care.
Supporting Saudi Vision 2030
This medical advancement aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to modernize healthcare delivery and position the Kingdom’s hospitals among the global leaders in medical innovation. Robotic CABG is an example of applying advanced technology to enhance patient outcomes and elevate healthcare standards.
The hospital plans to continue expanding its robotic cardiac surgery program, increasing access to minimally invasive, precise, and efficient surgical solutions. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to integrate innovative technologies into healthcare, supporting patient safety and superior treatment experiences.
