Kiran Rao Discusses Outsider Talent and Shifting Stardom in Bollywood

Post by : Meena Hassan

In a recent conversation, director Kiran Rao expressed her preference for collaborating with newcomers in Bollywood, highlighting rising entourage costs as a significant factor. With her film Laapataa Ladies, she introduced three new actors—Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastava—pointing out that fresh talents come without the challenges often associated with established star kids.

“They seamlessly integrate into the independent film environment where equality, fair hours, and resource minimization are the norms. Newcomers adapt better to these conditions,” Rao remarked.

When discussing her experiences launching outsider actors compared to star kids like Aamir Khan’s son, Junaid Khan, she acknowledged the disparity in audience views. “A so-called ‘nepo kid’ is often viewed through a lens of privilege. While their path may be difficult, expectations and scrutiny are constant. New actors, however, allow audiences to appreciate their evolution,” she stated.

Regarding the advantages for outsiders in making their mark, Rao agreed that it's easier today. “In the modern era, people seek to discover talent naturally. While interest in famous families is prevalent, creating a star entails responsibility. Outsiders can often be judged solely on their performance,” she observed.

Rao further emphasized a significant change in the film industry: “The classic star system is diminishing. Today's stardom emerges from various platforms—social media, web series, and connections with directors. Audiences are finding talent through new avenues, fundamentally transforming perceptions of fame.”
