Kota Consumer Court Summons Salman Khan Over Rajshree Pan Masala Ad

Kota Consumer Court Summons Salman Khan Over Rajshree Pan Masala Ad

Post by : Meena Hassan

Bollywood actor Salman Khan has been served a notice by a consumer court in Kota, Rajasthan, after a complaint alleging misleading promotion of a pan masala product he endorses.

Khan is the brand ambassador for Rajshree, a company that produces elaichi and pan masala. The complaint, filed by senior lawyer and political leader Inder Mohan Singh Honey, alleges the ads described the product as “saffron-infused cardamom” and “saffron-infused pan masala,” which he says is unlikely given the product's low retail price of ₹5. He pointed out that saffron costs around ₹4 lakh per kilogram, casting doubt on the claims.

The petitioner argues such representations may encourage younger consumers to use pan masala, a product linked to a high incidence of mouth cancer. The complaint also stressed that celebrities, as public role models, should avoid endorsing items that could harm public health.

The Kota Consumer Court has issued notices calling for responses from Salman Khan and the Rajshree manufacturer. The case is listed for the next hearing on 27 November, pending formal replies.

Although Salman Khan is associated with Rajshree elaichi, he has not appeared in advertisements for the brand’s pan masala. The complainant maintains that the overall branding nonetheless has the potential to influence consumer behaviour, especially among youth.
