Kroger's Warehouse Shutdowns Impact Ocado's U.S. Growth Ambitions

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Shares of the British online grocery retailer and technology company Ocado experienced a significant drop on Tuesday, following Kroger's announcement regarding the closure of three of its automated warehouses scheduled for January. This measure endangers Ocado’s ambitions for expansion in the U.S. and is expected to decrease its projected revenue by about $50 million.

Since 2018, Ocado, which is celebrated for its automation in customer fulfillment, has collaborated with Kroger to enhance grocery delivery across the United States. The original strategy aimed at rolling out 20 automated facilities, but only eight have commenced operations, with the impending closure of three—located in Frederick, Maryland; Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin; and Groveland, Florida. Fortunately, five other sites will maintain their operations.

These shutdowns indicate a change in Kroger’s strategy toward automation. The grocery chain has previously suggested a reassessment of its network on a “site-by-site” basis, demonstrating a careful approach following a mixed deployment of Ocado’s innovations. In light of these closures, Ocado is still set to receive upwards of $250 million as compensation.

This situation has raised alarms about Ocado’s prospects for forming new partnerships in the U.S. market, which is vital to its growth plans. Analysts observe that despite Ocado's ongoing efforts to assist Kroger with logistics at the remaining locations, these challenges underscore the uncertainties linked to large-scale automation initiatives.
