Kuala Lumpur Safeguards 45 Additional Green Spaces

Kuala Lumpur Safeguards 45 Additional Green Spaces

Post by : Shakul

Hannah Yeoh recently revealed that 45 more green and open spaces in Kuala Lumpur have been officially gazetted, increasing the total number of safeguarded areas in the city to 539. This initiative is designed to maintain urban green spaces for public enjoyment and ecological sustainability.

The newly protected zones cover an area of about 277,663 square meters, which is nearly equivalent to 39 football fields. These spaces are now permanently allocated for community use, ensuring they remain untouched by future development.

Yeoh underscored that this initiative showcases the government’s dedication to preserving public areas for families and future generations. A specialized task force is actively working on recognizing and securing green spaces throughout the capital.

According to Kuala Lumpur Mayor Fadlun Mak Ujud, this initiative aligns with the city’s vision of evolving into a “sponge city,” enhancing water absorption, minimizing flood risks, and managing urban heat through greater green coverage.

This latest announcement builds on a previous initiative in February 2026, when nearly 500 green spaces were gazetted. Authorities indicate that this process is ongoing, with additional areas under consideration for future protection.

Officials also emphasized the importance of transparency, as information regarding all gazetted sites is now publicly accessible online. This helps residents stay informed and ensures accountability in urban planning.

In summary, this action represents a critical move towards sustainable urban development in Kuala Lumpur, balancing rapid expansion with environmental preservation and enhancing the quality of life for its inhabitants.
