A heartbreaking event unfolded in Andhra Pradesh's Kurnool district early Friday morning, when a private bus went up in flames near Chinnatekur village in Kallur mandal, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 passengers and injuring many more. The incident, known as the Kurnool bus tragedy, occurred around 3 am when a Kaveri Travels bus traveling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru collided with a two-wheeler on the highway. Reports indicate that the two-wheeler got lodged beneath the bus, hitting the fuel tank and causing a sudden explosion. The swift spread of fire left passengers with little opportunity to flee, transforming the scene into one of chaos and destruction.
Many on board were asleep at the time of the collision, complicating efforts to escape. The Kurnool bus tragedy involved 41 passengers, 21 of whom survived, including the two drivers who managed to escape the chaos. Kurnool District Collector A Siri has confirmed that 11 of the 20 deceased have been identified so far, with ongoing efforts to identify the remaining victims. Local authorities and police promptly responded to the incident, emphasizing the urgent need for rescue operations in the wake of the fire.
The tragedy has drawn significant media attention, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing profound condolences over the Kurnool bus tragedy. He announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured. “I am extremely saddened by the loss of life resulting from the incident in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. My thoughts are with the affected families during this trying time,” stated the Prime Minister’s office. This incident has sparked widespread grief and solidarity across the nation.
President Droupadi Murmu also shared her sympathies, lamenting the loss of life in the Kurnool bus tragedy. She extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished for the swift recovery of the injured. The incident highlights the perils of road travel and underscores the critical need for stringent safety regulations, particularly concerning private bus operations in Andhra Pradesh and elsewhere.
Investigations into the Kurnool bus tragedy are currently underway, as authorities probe how the collision resulted in such a swift and deadly fire. Police are also looking into the actions of the bus drivers, who escaped the scene. The Kurnool bus tragedy raises essential questions about highway safety practices, vehicle maintenance, and emergency response protocols, urging officials to reassess current regulations to avert similar calamities in the future.
This catastrophic bus event stands as one of the most severe bus accidents in recent times, emphasizing both the immense human toll of road accidents and the pressing need for rigorous safety enforcement. As rescue efforts persist and families grieve, the nation is reminded of life's fragility and the importance of safeguarding our highways.
