Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh): A devastating accident occurred early Friday morning when a bus traveling from Hyderabad to Bengaluru caught fire in Kurnool district, resulting in the deaths of at least 12 individuals and injuring several others. The tragedy unfolded near Chinnatekur village around 3:30 am, following a collision with a two-wheeler that ignited a massive blaze engulfing the entire bus.
Initial reports indicate there were approximately 40 people aboard the bus, with 18 escaping the inferno, many utilizing the emergency exit as flames rapidly spread. Eyewitness accounts describe how fire erupted in the front region of the bus before quickly consuming the entire vehicle. The remains of several victims were so severely burned that identification may prove challenging for authorities.
Emergency responders were dispatched promptly after receiving alerts. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the cause of the fire, though heavy rainfall in the area at the time is suspected to have contributed to the crash. The vehicle was utterly destroyed by flames.
“The deceased remain within the bus. We are conducting on-site postmortems based on the situation,” shared Health Minister Sri Satyakumar Yadav, noting that DNA samples are being collected for victim identification. He informed that twelve passengers received minor injuries, with six having been discharged from care.
This tragic incident has evoked deep grief across the nation, with expressions of condolence from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
Prime Minister Modi expressed his sorrow on social media, stating, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh. My thoughts and prayers are with the affected families, and I wish for the swift recovery of the injured.” He also announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for each deceased's family, along with ₹50,000 for those injured.
The President offered her condolences, calling the incident “extremely unfortunate,” and prayed for the injured’s swift recovery.
Expressing his grief, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu stated, “I am heartbroken to learn of this disastrous fire accident near Chinna Tekur village. My sympathies are with the families impacted by this tragedy. The government is committed to supporting the affected and healing those injured.”
Witnesses revealed that despite many escaping, the rapid spread of the fire made quick action essential to survival. As authorities look into the bus fire incident, there are concerns surrounding road safety, particularly during late-night travel on highways that may suffer from poor visibility and damp conditions. Investigations are underway to determine if the two-wheeler involved was parked or in motion at the time of the collision, which could clarify the events leading to the bus fire.
As rescue teams work diligently to manage the wreckage and assist with the identification of victims, families are converging at Kurnool Government Hospital in hopes of news on their loved ones.
This Kurnool bus misfortune highlights the perils associated with night-time highway travel and emphasizes the urgent requirement for enhanced safety measures, better emergency services, and regular inspections of long-distance transport.
