Kuwait has revoked the citizenship of 2,192 people in its latest round of nationality reviews, according to decrees published in the country's official gazette, Kuwait Al Youm. The move is part of a wider campaign launched by authorities to examine citizenship records and verify the legal basis on which nationality was granted.
Eight Decrees Announced By Authorities
The citizenship withdrawals were outlined through eight separate government decrees. The largest action came under Decree No. 92, which alone affected 1,594 individuals. The official gazette also published the names of those impacted, including dependants who had obtained Kuwaiti nationality through family connections.
Ongoing Campaign Continues Across Kuwait
The latest decision follows a large-scale nationality review process that has been underway for the past two years. Kuwaiti authorities have already revoked citizenship from tens of thousands of individuals during this period. Officials maintain that the campaign is intended to ensure compliance with nationality laws and protect the integrity of citizenship records.
Citizenship Highly Valued In Kuwait
Citizenship in Kuwait carries significant social and economic benefits, making it one of the most valuable legal statuses in the country. Kuwaiti citizens represent only around 1.5 million people within a total population of approximately 4.5 million residents, meaning nationals remain a minority in their own country.
Legal Grounds For Citizenship Withdrawal
Under Kuwait's nationality law, citizenship can be revoked for several reasons. These include obtaining nationality through fraud, submitting false information, holding dual citizenship without authorization, or engaging in activities considered harmful to the state's interests. Authorities may also review citizenship granted through dependency or exceptional services.
Previous High-Profile Cases Drew Attention
The nationality review campaign has included several notable cases. In December 2025, Kuwaiti authorities revoked the citizenship of prominent Islamic preacher and businessman Tariq Al Suwaidan. The decision also extended to dependants who had acquired nationality through him, although no specific legal explanation was publicly provided.
Government Links Review To National Security
Kuwaiti officials have repeatedly stated that the nationality review process is linked to national security and legal compliance. Earlier this year, authorities announced the dismantling of a network accused of financing terrorist organizations, noting that one of the suspects had previously lost Kuwaiti citizenship. The government says the review process will continue as part of efforts to strengthen security and uphold national laws.
