Kuwait’s Ministry of Justice released new data showing 222 cases of khula, a type of divorce initiated by wives, between January 1 and July 31, 2025. During the same period, 287 divorces were recorded for Kuwaiti women before consummation, while 439 cases involved husbands staying married to one or more wives.
Overall Marriages and Divorces
The ministry’s statistics also revealed a total of 2,666 divorces among Kuwaiti couples in the first seven months of 2025. In the same period, 5,993 marriages were registered between Kuwaiti men and women, representing over 75 percent of all unions between nationals. These figures highlight ongoing trends in marriage stability and family dynamics within the country.
Family Mediation Centres
To address rising divorce rates, the Justice Ministry has strengthened the role of family mediation centres. These centres employ specialists in sociology and family relations, alongside religious scholars, to help couples resolve conflicts before they escalate to divorce. Mediation sessions provide guidance, counselling, and practical solutions to improve family harmony.
Inter-Agency Collaboration
Officials emphasized collaboration between government agencies to educate newlywed couples about social challenges. This includes programs highlighting the impact of drug use on families and society, as well as broader negative consequences associated with divorce. Such initiatives aim to prevent family breakdown and support long-term marital stability.
Goals of the New Framework
The ministry’s framework focuses on preventive measures rather than only responding to divorce cases. By intervening early and offering counselling, the government seeks to reduce the emotional, social, and economic costs of divorce for families and society.
Role of Specialists in Mediation
Family mediation centres employ trained professionals who combine social science approaches with cultural and religious guidance. This multi-disciplinary approach helps couples find mutually acceptable solutions while respecting Kuwaiti traditions and laws.
Broader Social Impact
High divorce rates can have long-term effects on society, including economic strain, emotional stress, and challenges for children in affected families. The ministry’s efforts reflect a proactive approach to strengthening family structures and reducing negative social outcomes.
Kuwait’s Justice Ministry aims to expand awareness programs, improve mediation services, and enhance preventive strategies. Through these measures, officials hope to create stronger, more resilient families and reduce the frequency of divorce in the coming years.
With 2,666 divorces recorded in 2025 so far, Kuwait is taking significant steps to address family challenges. The adoption of mediation centres, public awareness campaigns, and inter-agency collaboration demonstrates a commitment to supporting couples, reducing family breakdown, and fostering stable family life.
