Death Threats for Jhalmuri Vendor Post PM Visit

Death Threats for Jhalmuri Vendor Post PM Visit

Post by : Shakul

A jhalmuri vendor in Jhargram, West Bengal, has reported receiving death threats from unknown sources since Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited his food stall earlier this year.

Vikram Sao, the vendor in question, stated that the harassment began following Prime Minister Modi's stop at his stall on April 19 during a prominent election campaign in the area, which garnered substantial media attention.

Sao mentioned that he has been inundated with calls and video messages from numbers believed to be associated with Pakistan and Bangladesh. The threats include ominous messages regarding his safety and that of his family, along with warnings of potential bombings.

Some intimidators opted for video calls, showcasing menacing gestures and weapons to induce fear. He also received alarming WhatsApp messages outlining serious threats.

Though the callers did not explicitly reference his encounter with the Prime Minister, Sao is convinced that the threats escalated after his newfound notoriety following the official visit.

During his visit, PM Modi was seen engaging with Sao, requesting him to prepare the classic Bengali snack made of puffed rice and other ingredients. In a widely circulated video, Modi insisted on paying for the food, despite Sao's initial refusal.

Local authorities have bolstered security around Sao and his family, with police stationed near their home as they investigate the origins of the threatening calls.

A formal inquiry is underway to ascertain the culpability of those behind the threats, determining whether the incidents are genuine or part of a coordinated campaign to instill fear. This situation has raised alarms regarding online harassment and the vulnerability of ordinary individuals thrust into the spotlight due to political happenings.

The incident has sparked a wave of support for Sao on social media, with many users calling for urgent action against the individuals responsible for the threats.
