In a notable turn of events capturing attention across India and Pakistan, the Lahore High Court has instructed police to refrain from harassing an Indian Sikh woman who converted to Islam to marry a Pakistani Muslim man she has known for nearly a decade. This situation has sparked a range of emotional, legal, and diplomatic conversations, particularly after her initial disappearance raised security alarms.
Sikh Woman Remains in Pakistan After Online Connection
Sarabjeet Kaur, 48, arrived in Pakistan earlier this month as part of a group of approximately 2,000 Sikh pilgrims crossing through the Wagah border for Guru Nanak’s birthday celebrations. While the majority returned to India on November 13, Kaur chose to remain, prompting concerns from her family.
She remained in Lahore to marry Nasir Hussain, a resident of Sheikhupura whom she had met on Facebook nearly ten years ago. Police records indicate that the marriage took place just a day after her arrival on November 4.
Claims of Police Raids and Pressures
On Tuesday, Kaur, now known as Noor, along with her husband, appealed to the Lahore High Court, alleging that a senior police officer had conducted an "illegal raid" on their home in Farooqabad, Sheikhupura, and reportedly pressured them to annul their marriage.
The couple's petition accused police of harassment, questioning the authenticity of their relationship, and pressuring Kaur to return to India against her wishes.
Justice Farooq Haider ruled that police must cease any intimidation towards the couple moving forward.
Kaur States She Married Voluntarily
A video circulating online features Kaur asserting that her conversion to Islam and marriage to Hussain were both voluntary decisions. She noted she was a divorcee in India and had long sought this union.
“I am a divorcee and wanted to marry Hussain; hence I came here for this purpose,” she stated in the video. “I entered this marriage happily, yet we are facing police harassment and threats from unknown individuals.”
Kaur has also mentioned that she has contacted the Indian consulate regarding extending her visa and pursuing Pakistani citizenship.
Investigation into Her Disappearance by Indian Authorities
In India’s Punjab state, police indicated they are investigating after Kaur’s family reported her missing when she did not return with other pilgrims. Reports suggest that her previous husband has been living outside the country for several years. Kaur, who hails from Amanipur village in Kapurthala district, is a mother of two sons.
Marriage Across Borders Sparks Sensitive Discussions
This incident has ignited discourse regarding cross-border marriages, religious conversions, and the rights of Indian citizens residing in Pakistan beyond lawful timeframes. It also highlights the critical role of law enforcement in safeguarding individuals’ rights to marry freely.
The Lahore High Court's ruling seeks to ensure that Kaur and Hussain can live without harassment while the legal and diplomatic situation develops. Currently, the couple resides in Sheikhupura, awaiting updates on Kaur's visa and possible citizenship.
