Dubai, UAE – January 2026: DP World has introduced the Dubai Food District, a significant transformation of the Al Aweer Central Fruit and Vegetable Market. This initiative is part of a vision to develop one of the largest and most sophisticated food trade centres globally.
The Dubai Food District will unfold in phases, with the first phase commencing in 2027. This expansion will increase the existing market's footprint to 29 million square feet, creating a diverse hub for food trade. The district is aimed at fortifying supply chains, boosting trade volume, and enhancing regional food security.
This new facility aims to provide an integrated ecosystem for trade, storage, processing, and distribution. It will feature cold storage facilities, climate-controlled warehouses, primary and secondary processing units, digital solutions, cash-and-carry setups, and a gourmet food hall catering to both businesses and consumers.
Originally announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in July 2024, the project intends to diversify its offerings beyond fruits and vegetables, including dairy products, gourmet items, staples, and specialty foods, thus establishing Dubai as a vital global food trade hub.
Since its inception in 2004, the Al Aweer Market has been essential for over 2,500 traders, supplying fresh produce throughout the UAE and beyond. The Dubai Food District aims to enhance Al Aweer's contribution to the food ecosystem while improving efficiency, variety, and speed, ultimately reducing supply chain vulnerabilities.
His Excellency Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, stated:
"The Dubai Food District reinforces Dubai’s leadership in the food trade sector by integrating exceptional infrastructure, global accessibility, and sophisticated logistics in one location. Our efforts will empower farmers and traders to tap into new markets swiftly and sustainably."
Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO & Managing Director of DP World GCC, further added:
"With soaring global food demands and strained supply chains, the Dubai Food District is a vital investment. It will spur innovation in trade and contribute to sustainable economic growth."
The district’s strategic placement allows for multimodal connectivity, linking producers and traders with over 20 global markets via DP World’s logistics network. This infrastructure is crafted to ensure that supply chains are agile, secure, and economically feasible for businesses of all scales.
DP World will showcase the Dubai Food District during Gulfood 2026 at Gulfood Fresh and Logistics, North Hall 12, stand GG.H2.
